Monday's Prescribed 5 km

In Calgary the saying is "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes." While it was pretty darn chilly on the weekend (3 deg C on Sunday), all of a sudden the temperature skyrocketed on Monday. I went for a run over lunch and when I started out it was 10 deg C (50 deg F) and it was 17 deg C (63 deg F) when I finished. It was amazing! I had 5 km on the schedule to be run at a reasonably easy pace. While I was out there I crossed paths with Sheena, my old BBC coach extraordinaire. She was running some smokin' fast mile repeats. I finished up in 29:18. Imagine that - an easy 5 km training run that I finished in less than 30 minutes. I really wish I could find a chip timed 5 km race around here before the end of the year to see where I could PR at!

Otherwise it was a pretty uneventful night. It was one of my only opportunities to have a relaxing night in with no workout planned or no one to see which was really nice. I whipped up one of my favourite quick and easy meals courtesy of Jamie Oliver's third cookbook. Olivieri makes whole wheat broccoli and cheese ravioli that I cooked in boiling water with some broccoli at the same time. While that was going I fried up some garlic, hot pepper flakes and anchovies. Add the pasta and broccoli to the frying pan with a bit of cooking water (if needed) and a bit of butter if you want. Top with cheese... Delicious! Don't be afraid of the anchovies. You won't even know that they are there, but without them the flavour won't be the same.

Congrats on your fast 5k easy run! That dish looks delish - so many people are afraid of anchovies but they really do add nice flavor, especially when paired with some kalamata olives.

I love this time of year in Ontario, but the weather can change on a dime around here too. I never know what to wear!

Congrats on your quick & easy 5K. :)

Wow, that is some crazy temperature variations! And I'm sure you've gotten much faster since your last 5K. Some people keep track of their unofficial 5K race times too since many 5Ks are not timed.

Nice work! You could probably kill a 5k or a 10k right now! There's gotta be some fun runs coming up for the holidays that you could knock out :)

Keep up the great work!!
