Vancouver Sun Run Race Report

59,175 people signed up for the race - I believe surpassing the Peachtree Road Race as the largest 10K in North America. There were 44,160 finishers (or so the preliminary results say).
---
I had a pretty fractured sleep the night before the race but I was up and alert at 7:30. We could see the starting area from our hotel room window and we waited until about 8:30 before heading down to the start.
The weather was unseasonably cold in Vancouver. It was 1 deg C (34 deg F) at the start with a projected high of 8 deg C (46 deg F). I dressed in a pair of capris, a short sleeve top and my long sleeve Disney Marathon tech top on top. Because it was so cool, and I have a tendency to cool off really quickly afterwards, I opted to pay $5 to gear check a sweatshirt at the end.
---
The start line for the race is massive - there are 6 corrals and they really pace out the start so that the beginning of the race isn't too crowded. Two years ago I ran in the purple corral - the second to last corral - and it took me over an hour to get to the start line. Based off of my personal best 57:56 I signed up for the green corral this year - the 50 - 58 min runners. What does it look like when they are nearly 60,000 people at the start line?

Pretty insane, eh? There were security guys checking coloured bibs as you were entering the starting area, but somehow or other I saw a few purple and red bibbed folks around us. The race started at 9 am, then our corral was allowed to start about 9 minutes later.Pretty well as soon as we crossed the mat Neil and I lost each other. I found him a couple of times over the course of the race, but we pretty well ran the race on our own. The first 1 km was all downhill along Georgia Street towards Stanley Park. Seeing the mass of people ahead of you is definitely a sight. The second km was uphill through the and slowed me down a bit. It was around here that my shins started to bug me - seriously, can't this problem go away already! I stuck with it and finally just past the 3 km marker things started to improve. We ran down English Bay - part of which I had run on Friday - and headed towards the Burrard Street Bridge - the halfway point. Just before getting to the bridge we had a steep hill to run up, then more uphill as we ran along the bridge. Despite the uphill this is probably one of my favourite sports on the course. After this I just remember the kilometer marking signs ticking away. I knew I wasn't going to go under an hour on the race, but I also knew I was on pace to beat my time at the St. Patrick's Day 10K. All of a sudden I was running the Cambie Street Bridge, then on the off ramp heading towards BC Place and the finish line. I kicked it in for the final sprint and crossed the mat, finishing in 1:03:11. Not a PR, but I'll take it.
I figured that Neil would only be a few minutes behind me, so I waited off to the side just before trip retrieval. Once Neil crossed we waited so he could give back his chip. There was a schmozzle of people at this point as folks were lining up at the first person they saw with clippers to cut their chip off, instead of moving farther down the line to help ease the back up a bit. I heard later that at one point the back up got so bad that people couldn't cross the finish line and they had to wait. Immediately after giving back the chip we headed to gear check and saw a massive line. I figured since there were still at least half or two thirds of the total racers still out on the course I'd better get in line now, plus I really needed my top by this time. After about 20 min in line here's what it looked like:

Kind of a mess, eh? I finally made it to the front of the line and I handed my bib off to someone and after that I never saw him again. A bunch of us were waiting around for 10, 15, 20 minutes with still no sign of our bags. A few folks were hopping over the tables to search themselves. I asked someone else if she could look for my bag but after a few minutes she gave up and went on to search for someone else. Frustrated, three of us hopped over the tables to look on our own. Bags were organized by bib colour, but that was about it. They were all pretty well in a mess on the floor. No wonder things were taking so long. I took two turns around the room looking for my stuff. Just as I was about to resign myself to the fact that I wouldn't see my top again I spotted on bag on a table - my bag! The kid who went to search for my bag had found it, but never bothered to make sure he got it back to me. I realize the logistics behind checking bags can be pretty tough when you have that many runners, plus I really respect all the volunteers that come out to help because races don't happen without them. However I was pretty disappointed that after paying to check my stuff that I nearly lost it, and that I had to go look for it myself. By this point in time I was shivering and pretty peeved. We went inside BC Place to check out the after party but couldn't even spot the bagels or bananas. We decided to skip out and head back to the hotel since we still had to shower and pack and check out in the next hour and a half.
---
So...all in all I really enjoyed the race - the scenery is amazing along the route, you can't beat the high you get from running a race with that many people, and the volunteers along the course were terrific. I was disappointed in the race at the end, but it wouldn't stop me from running it again. The final statistics:
1:03:11
Overall: 15,953 out of 44,160
Females Overall: 5866 out of 24,866
F25-29: 1277 out of 3814

Running Vancouver

Ah...the trip to Vancouver was a good one. I'll write up a separate race report for yesterday's Sun Run, but here are the details for the rest of the trip:

Thursday:

We arrive in Vancouver in the afternoon and caught a cab down to the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. Our cabbie didn't know where the hotel was, but thankfully I'm reasonably familiar with the city so we found it without too much incident.

After checking in we hopped a cab to Lumiere - the restaurant that used to be helmed by Iron Chef winner (and cookbook author and tv chef) Rob Feenie. He no longer works there thanks to some drama that took place recently, but we went to check the place out anyway. The food was delicious and we had a nice time.

Friday:

I got up for a run around town. I started at the hotel and ran towards Stanley Park. At the entrance to Stanley Park I hit Lost Lagoon:I ran around the lagoon and eventually arrive at the western edge of Stanley Park:

Wow, it was really windy out! The sun was shining though so it felt reasonably pleasant. I continued along the sea wall out of Stanley Park for a bit, then eventually I cut back towards the hotel and finished up with about 4.1 mi. I grabbed a coffee and bagel from Starbucks, then it was on to start the rest of the day.

In the afternoon we hit the Sun Run Expo at BC Place to get our bibs and race shirts. There were tons of people, but as I had already looked up our bib numbers things went pretty smoothly.

After the expo we took a water taxi to Granville Island where Neil and I spent some quality time at Granville Island Brewing. It should be noted that nothing in Vancouver is cheap, but this place is certainly a great deal. GIB has a taproom with four different brews on tap that you can taste, or you can tour the facility. A pint is $4.06 and a big plate of chips and salsa is less than $5. Definitely one of the best drink deals in town. We tasted as much GIB as possible before walking back to the hotel. That evening we met up with a friend of Neil's for some tapas at Bin 941. This place is a tiny hole in the wall. We wound up waiting an hour for a table (they don't take reservations), but the food was amazing. While we were at dinner it snowed outside - big fluffy white flakes that luckily didn't stick to the ground.

Saturday

We spent the afternoon wandering around the Vancouver Aquarium. We had enough time to catch the beluga whale show, see the dolphins and watch them feed the otters. For dinner we found quite possibly the next best deal in town at Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House. They are running a Fanny Bay Oyster festival. For $48 you get a bottle of wine and a dozen oysters. Considering that bottles start around $40 you get the oysters for just a few bucks extra. Wine, oysters, ahi tuna, and a terrific ice cream cookie sandwich for dessert made for one pretty terrific pre-race dinner.

Sunday

Sunday was race day. Once all was said and done we had enough time to meet friends for lunch afterwards, then go for a second round of oysters at Joe Fortes before heading out to catch our flight back to Calgary. Sigh, the bad news is that thanks to a ton of walking on Saturday and an unfortunate sock seam I did some damage to my small toe on my left foot. I'm not sure if it is entirely a blister but something started bleeding while we were walking around. It is still pretty painful, but luckily it didn't factor into the run though. Despite that, all in all, it was a great weekend though!

Registration Update

So far 55,785 people have signed up for Sunday's race. Crazy!

Raring to Go

Yesterday I got a 4 mi run in around my neighborhood in the afternoon. This run was noteworthy because I actually ran outside in shorts! The run was...ugh...kinda. The first mile was fine - probably because it was all downhill. Once I hit mile two my legs were complaining. They didn't want to run and my left shin was bugging me. Once I hit mile three I had a big uphill to tackle and that put me back on track as the hill felt pretty good. The last mile was uneventful. I haven't biked this week, partly due to time constraints and partly because I want to rest my legs a bit.
---
Anyhow...I'm off to Vancouver this afternoon and I can't wait! The weather in Calgary is supposed to be yucky this weekend - full of snow and cold weather. It is actually supposed to be sunny in Vancouver so it looks like I picked a good time to head out of town. I think I am well prepared for the trip:
  • Race outfit picked out and packed
  • Dining reservations done
  • 4 mi run for Friday mapped out
  • Plans with friends made

I am looking forward to eating copious amounts of seafood and indulging in some of Granville Island Brewing's best. And running, yes...I am looking forward to running!

Weekend Wrap Up

This weekend was a busy one:
Saturday
I had 9 miles on the schedule and as I had a few things to do that day my plan was to do my run around my neighborhood. The run felt great. Hurrah for rediscovering the love of running. I decided to run 9.3 - a full 15K - just to see how it went. My pace was pretty bang on what I ran at the Minnie 15K last year, except this run was full of hills, so I think I'm in good shape for the Minnie this year.
Sunday
Bikini Boot Camp (aka BBC) starts up next week so I had my returnee fitness assessment. We did a max heart rate test and my recovery is great, so despite being sick for so long my fitness is still pretty good.
In the afternoon we had a forecasted high of 20 deg C (68 deg F) so a bike ride was on order. I rode from my neighborhood towards downtown and made it as far as the Park & Ride at Shouldice Park (1 km short of where I've been parking at Edworthy to ride in from) before I had to turn around and head home. I estimate that if I ride from my house to work the distance is probably around 13 miles one way. The ride home was a good workout as I tackled the hill up to my neighborhood. The climb is 361 ft over the final 3 miles. All in all I covered 16.3 mi. I'm definitely loving this new bike!
Coming Up
This week is going to be a busy one. My final Fit Ball session is tonight, plus I'd like to get three runs in during the week, plus my race on Sunday. I'm not sure how much biking I'll get in though. Thursday afternoon I'm off to Vancouver so I can run in the Vancouver Sun Run. This is the largest 10K event in Canada. So far they have a record number 54,320 people signed up! Sunday marks the official start to racing madness as I have 5 races in 23 days coming up.

Hotels Galore

It seems as if I am not on vacation I'm thinking about the next vacation and this week was one for hotel bookings. I've made reservations for all of my out of town races with the exception of January's marathon:
  • For the Sun Run in Vancouver Neil and I will be staying at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. Luxury!
  • I booked the Saratoga Springs Resort for the Minnie Marathon in May - the same place we have stayed at for the last couple of Disney races.
  • I am super excited for the trip to Quebec City to run the Marathon Des Deaux Rives. This one will be spent at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac - a famous Quebec landmark. It isn't one of the official race hotels but I couldn't pass up the chance to stay there.
  • I love an opportunity to spend a night in Banff - it is my favourite destination for when you want to get out of town but it doesn't take long to get there. The Fox Hotel and Suites will be the place to unwind after the Melissa's race in September.

Speaking of Vancouver....it has been awhile since I was there last and the restaurant scene is always changing. Any Vancouverites out there have any suggestions for must do restaurants in town?

Bad news, good news

Well, so the bad news is, it is bronchitis. Apparently:
running a marathon
+
living in Calgary
=
bronchitis
I have been loaded up with antibiotics and ordered to eat soup and keep clear of work for at least three days. Who am I to argue? My main goal for this week is to watch the entire 1996 A&E mini-series version of Pride and Prejudice. The good news is that the whole wisdom tooth thing has been pushed to March 27th now.
---
In other news, I am officially official in a couple of races. I have signed up for the Vancouver Sun Run and purchased the plane tickets to get out there. I also gave some money to Disney to sign my mom and I up as a mother/daughter team to run the Minnie Marathon 15K. I still have to sign up for the St. Paddy's Day race and the Go Red for Women 5K, but I thought I would give my Visa a bit of a break for a day or two.
---
If any of you are even remotely considering one of the events at the 2009 Walt Disney World Marathon, it may be time to make that decision pretty quickly. The Goofy is at 85% capacity and the half marathon is at 55% capacity. I figure the Goofy will likely be sold out by the end of the week or early next week. There are no capacities posted on the full yet, so there is still some time before the crunch is on to sign up for that race.

Goals and goal races for 2008 and beyond...

In an attempt to avoid the post-marathon slump I'm determined to keep looking forward. I have a few goals I would like to aim for over the next 12 months:
  1. Run a sub-60:00 10K in Alberta. I managed one near sea level in Seattle, now I want to know that I can do it at altitude.
  2. Run a sub-30:00 5K. First I have to find a 5K to race though. Most of them around here seem to conflict with other races I want to do.
  3. Keep my fitness level at the point where I could run a half marathon at the drop of a hat. It might not be easy, or it might not be a PR, but this is what I'm hoping for. I figure if I aim to average 20 miles/week unless I'm specifically training for something, then this should be doable. Don't worry, I'm giving myself some time off before I start in on this 20 miles/week plan though.
  4. Keep some variety in my workouts. I'm sticking with Fit Ball over the winter, then it is back to Bikini Boot Camp in the spring. I'll be looking out for the unlimited pass to the yoga studio this summer again too.

As for goal races, here is what I have on my radar:

  1. St. Patrick's Day 10K Road Race in Calgary on March 16th. This race marks the full circle of my racing year, plus the post race stew is terrific.
  2. Vancouver Sun Run on April 20th (10K). This was my first ever race and I love running Vancouver, plus it is the second largest 10K in all of North America.
  3. Minnie Marathon Weekend May 3-4 at Walt Disney World. I'll be running the 5K and the 15K again this year. This is rumoured to be the final ever Minnie Marathon, so this is your last chance for a Minnie medal. I need mine to go with my Donald, Mickey and Goofy medals from this year.
  4. Footstock Half Marathon in Cochrane on June 14th. I ran the 10K there last year, but this time I'm going back for the half. You get a nice tech shirt and a nifty medal at this one, plus I love the post race pancake breakfast.
  5. If I find a great airfare deal I may want to run the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon on June 22. But we'll see about that...
  6. Marathon Des Deux Rives in Quebec City on August 24th. I really want to see more of eastern Canada and Quebec is top of my list. I hear this is an amazingly well organized race that is very scenic. I'm leaning towards the option of running a full here. Apparently the kilometer markers count down, not up!
  7. Melissa's 10K Road Race in Banff on September 27th. This is providing I'm able to register as the entries for this go like hot cakes in this town. There is a half marathon option here too, but number one choice is the 10K.
  8. Walt Disney World Marathon on January 11, 2009. I have to admit that I am enviously watching Maddy, Ovens2Betsy, Angry and Claire sign up to run the Goofy next year. I would really like to *run* this marathon and run it well so I think I'm going to stick with the option to run the full on its own. One day I want to go back and run the Goofy again, but 2009 won't be the year.
