The good, the bad and the sad

I had a 90 minute run on my schedule for this weekend.  I woke up before 6 am without an alarm on Sunday morning thanks to the time change.  Since I figured my neighbours wouldn’t appreciate me banging flooring in that morning I quickly got dressed and headed out for my run.  Despite the fact that the sun wasn’t up yet it was actually quite nice out.  0C.  You guys are probably laughing at my definition of “nice” but these days if the temperatures aren’t below 0C then it is actually kinda warm!

The Good

I haven’t done a 90 minute run in I don’t know how long.  Probably back at Lake Stevens.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I actually felt great on the run!  I kept getting progressively faster throughout the run, with the exception of the last mile which was uphill.  As the sun was coming up it was turning out to be a beautiful day.  What a great morning for a run!

The Bad

This being the morning after Halloween you could tell that some neighbourhood kids had been up to some mischief the night before.  Running through one little cul-de-sac some kids had taken all of the carved pumpkins that people had put out and smashed them all in the street.  What a mess!

The Sad

I run past this one house quite frequently and they have a medium to large hairy dog.  Not too sure on the breed.  I’ve noticed that they often have their dog tied up to the porch which is really just a set of steps and a concrete square in front of their front door.  Basically it is just large enough for this dog to lie down on.  Yesterday when I ran past their house it was probably just before 7 am…still dark out…and I could see a fuzzy shape by the front door.  It was 0C outside and this poor furry fella was probably sleeping outside all night.  It just broke my heart.

Does November equal the start of the holiday season to you?  The Christmas coffees are coming out at Second Cup and Starbucks and I saw my first Christmas shopping related commercial last night.  Anyhow, I figured this was a good time to try out my Vanilla Gingerbread holiday GU.  Hmm, not my favourite.  In my opinion it is way too sweet for me and I found the gingerbread flavour a little too overpowering.  I’ll stick with the chocolate mint I think!

Good job on your long run! When does your Ironman training kick in, or has it already?

I like to wait until Thanksgiving to break out the Christmas stuff (give the turkey his day), but retailers must think the earlier the better. Example: Week before Halloween. I'm wandering down the Halloween aisle looking for costume ideas. Halloween stuff on the left. Christmas on the right. And "It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas" blaring from the store sound system.

I might make an exception for the vanilla gingerbread GU though.

great job on the run!! oh, and we should 'rescue' the dog. seriously. in the dark of night we should take him/her and bring them to a nice warm home that will let them sleep inside. i bet they don't brush him either. sigh...

Oh Susi, I know... I forgot to mention it when I was writing last night but they have a fenced yard and I've never seen the dog in the yard. Poor thing never barks or makes a peep so I'm not sure why they keep him or her outside like that all the time. :(

So sad to hear about that puppy. breaks my heart.

Yes, I start to think about the holidays as soon as November rolls around. Actually, I purchased my first Christmas gift on Saturday. I like to put off the Christmas decorating and music until after thanksgiving though. But, I might decorate the week before thanksgiving, so when I get back it looks like Christmas!

Great job on the early morning run. 0C still feels pretty cold to me right nowe (we've been hovering a little higher in the mornings) but I'm getting used to it. Hard to believe it'll be -10 before long.... and colder!

I hate seeing dogs tied up outside day and night. :(

Sad to hear about that poor doggie -- unfortunately there are a lot of people in the Pass here that tie up their dogs too.

As for the Gu -- you know the biggest load of bunk is that Gu Roctane crap. That stuff tastes FOUL and cost more to boot. I'm thinking of trying to find some alternative homemade thing instead of gels. I've heard sweetened condensed milk works for some -- I'm going to try that...

way to go on a great run!

Hmm I think that because it's still 90 degrees I have no concept of the time of year and we won't be seeing any family for the holidays...so no I'm not really thinking about them this year. Kinda sad

Poor dog! Awesome run though! My holidat season starts on Black friday, but I am thinking of bumping it up a week early because it seems that after thanksgiving time flies so fast that you cant enjoy the holiday!

I love the gingerbread latte from starbucks too, mmmm!

Phone the human society, if an animal does not have proper shelter they will do something about it.

Good job on your run, sometimes everything just works out great!! BTW, love the new floor, saw the pictures and it looks awesome.

of course I read this post and all I can think about is that poor dog tied up outside all night in the winter. *sigh*
We adopted H-dog from a rescue society up here called Prairie Animal Rescue Society. I browse their website weekly to look at all the dogs (can't help myself!) and it never fails that there is at least one dog who has scars or wounds around the neck from being tied up and left outside. I just don't get it.

Great run though!

Oh man- now all i can think about is chocolate mint GU. Well, chocolate mint GU and that poor little doggie. Good job on the run!

Oh for Pete's sake, get rid of the dog if he's going to live outside. You and Susi have your work cut out for you. Free Willy!

Oohhh - chocolate mint is my favorite! YUM! I hate to say it - but down in SoCal...I've noticed Christmas/Holiday stuff coming out the week or two BEFORE Halloween. That is just wrong. It seems that sentiment is echoed among other commentators.... But, coming from MN and moving to San Diego - it just never really FEELS like the holiday season because (and don't hate me for this) - it stays warm for so long. Humph. I miss experiencing seasonal changes!

Glad that you had a solid run! And so sad about that puppy...sometimes people are just awful.

So sad about that dog being outside. But maybe it's an Alaskan Husky or something that is bred to be in the cold?

As for holidays, it's hard for me to get in the mood when it's 80 degs out and everyone is still walking around in shorts both in FL and HI!

Yes, Nov 1 means I start getting my Christmas on. Yahoo! Our basement is doing good, waiting to get a guy to do ceilings and then we're onto flooring and paint. Can't wait until it's done!

i haven't tried the gingerbread one yet - i hope i like it though! i did try the pineapple... i'm not much of one for fruityness i guess.

that's sad about the pup outside! i'm not a huge animal person, but i do get heartbroken over how some people treat their pets.
