Now for something completely different!

I promised that I was going to be trying something new today.  Want a hint as to what it was?DSCN2722

I took my first downhill ski lesson this evening!!  I have to admit that I haven’t really dabbled around in winter sports too much.  I’ve tried curling before a few years back, but the last time I played there were disastrous consequences.  Lately I’ve been thinking about trying skiing, particularly cross country skiing, so I’ve been investigating lessons.

But Leana, those would not be the suitable things to put on your feet for cross country skiing, right?

And well…that would be true!  On Tuesday my co-worker announced that he is planning a team building activity in February at a ski hill.  Um, but they only have downhill skiing…  So as I was contemplating downhill and cross country lessons I was looking over Canada Olympic Park’s webpage.  The Olympic Torch Relay has also been running through Calgary this week too.Torch Relay

While the torch has been in town COP has been running a deal on introductory ski and snowboard lessons.  The rentals, hill ticket and lesson were on special for $20.10.  (Get it $20.10…2010???)  It seemed like too good of a deal to pass up and luckily they had room for Thursday’s 5:30 pm lesson.

So how was it?  Luckily there were a couple of other adults there, but 90% of the class were young kids.  I’m not going to lie, I didn’t exactly unearth any hidden ski talent this evening on the slopes.  Well, unless you count my curious ability to veer towards the trees and then fall down a talent (while your instructor is yelling “Fall!!  Fall!!” at you).  It was fun though, and of course I’ll be giving it another whirl on our group ski trip day.  I’m excited to try cross country though.  I have a feeling that may be more my thing?  But we’ll see!DSCN2724

***By the way, I apologize but I put word verification back up.  I was getting a bit tired of the spam comments so I thought it was necessary.  I know it is a pain though!

Doesn't everyone have word verification these days? I wish it would stop the haters too hah.

I can't believe you don't ski! You better make up for it by telling me you play hockey ;)

What is it with the crap that gets posted on our blogs? So annoying.

Way go with skiing! I love it, and there's just not enough access (close enough)around here! I haven't gone for about 4 years!

Good for you for finding another way to enjoy Alberta winters and adding to your list of cross-training activities.

cheer gear! i love your scarf.

Learning to ski as an adult must me much scarier than learning as a child. Children are fearless and have no problem just "falling"- we know it can hurt! I hope you enjoy your next lesson.

Ahh, how fun! Kudos for trying something new. Who knows, you may end up loving it although I don't see how you could fit this activity into your schedule regularly. :)

Yea for trying downhill skiing. So much fun. I haven't gone in a few years, but I'm taking The Rugrats this year. Exciting!

Let us know how cross country skiing goes!

I recognize that scarf!!!! :)

Great job! Downhill skiing takes time to get good at (I have only done it 4 times ever, therefore I suck), but it is so fun!!!

Wow! I have never been much into winter/snow sports either but thought you must surely be into it with all the snow you have there in the winter. But better late than never. Have fun and do NOT break a leg!

I'm with you with winter sports. The hubby love them, and I'm okay at snowboarding. There is nothing more humbling though when a 10 year old laps you on a green!

Skiing is where it is at! The great thing about the sport is after only a couple of times you are very proficient. Great job!

My wife asked me to teach her to ski the other day and I just said no. It may be the quickest path to sleeping on the couch...

I have always wanted to try skiing. There are a bunch of places around here to go in the winter, but I have never tried it. Maybe I will have to give it a go next year.

Have fun in your new adventure!
