Breakfast of Champions

Now that I’m working hard to get back into things I know I really need to pay attention to what I’m eating.  It all starts with breakfast.

I definitely eat breakfast every day, but I generally wait to eat until I get to work.  I want something healthy and filling because if I just have toast I’m hungry 30 minutes later.  I soak some oatmeal overnight in double the amount of milk, along with some cinnamon and a touch of dried fruit.  At work I pour the oatmeal over half a diced apple and some almond butter.DSCN6083It keeps me full all the way until my lunch time workout so that cuts down on my desire to run and grab a coffee.  I view that as a success so far!

I’m curious though, what is your favourite healthy breakfast?  Do you have any tips to share with me?

The best "staying power" breakfast for me is steel cut oats. I make a big pot on the weekend and reheat through the week (just add a splash of hot water and microwave). I add cinnamon, brown sugar, chia seeds, chopped walnutsd and craisins. Filling, delicious, nutritious!

Good for you Leana for making positive changes! I think the best tip I could give is "listen to your body." If a certain food/combination of foods makes you fart or feel bloated and heavy and tired -- avoid it. If it works for you then stick with it!

One thing I have learned over and over again is that everybody is different and what works for one person does not necessarily work for another. I used to be a big oatmeal fan but I was ALWAYS hungry like an hour later.

What worked for me and made me drop 3 swimsuit sizes (yes I know I cannot stop bragging about this but I can't help it because frig....wouldn't you!! LOL!!) was cutting out all bread, grains, pasta, and dairy. No milk, no yogourt or cottage cheese. I eat a lot of yams, eggs, meat, fruit and veg, and avocados. LOTS of avocado.

I replaced milk with almond milk, and also take at least two TBsp of Udo's oil every day. I also stopped eating nut butters -- for some people it works, for me it just goes straight to my ass. Also stopped eating nuts -- only will eat a teeny tiny palmful (as opposed to my generous interpretation of handful -- LOL!!) maybe once a week if that.

I eat 21 eggs a week!! LMAO!! I am serious!! I eat a 3 egg omelette every morning cooked in a generous amount of olive oil AND with sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil.

Umm, what else....Oh yeah, at first I was very scared at how I would fuel myself for Ironman training -- I mean I could eat 3 gigantic bowls of spaghetti AND devour a chocolate cake after a big training day. Imagine my surprise when I cooked a frigging butternut squash and put some olive oil on it and I was SATIATED. After a 6 hour training day, I ate a frigging squash and some meat and some snow peas and I felt good -- not bloated.

Anyways, that's enough rambling out of me!! So gad you are back blogging girl!! :) :) I missed ya! :)

Granola. The good stuff, not much sugar. With various combinations of nuts and fruits. Sometimes with yogurt instead of milk. Sometimes pumpkin seeds, or flax, or other goodies.

I eat at work too... If I eat before work I'll stave all morning. Plus it helps the morning pass faster ;) Usually I do dry cereal in a bag--munching on it all morning "keeps me busy". Sometimes I bring oatmeal and a banana, sometimes Greek yogurt and fruit.

Well I'm in love with my breakfast and I have been for 3 years. It's the muslix recipe from the gi diet book Steel cut oats, oat bran, almonds, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, cinnamon combo. Take 1/3 cup of the mixture, soak overnight in about the same amount of skim milk. I to with frozen berries in the morn and microwave. Then I add 1/3 to 1/2 cup yogurt. When i was trying to lose weight I used low fat no sugar (splenda sweetened) yogurt but now I use full fat full sugar cause I can use the excuse I'm breastfeeding still. It's gonna be a shock to my system to go back to the other yogurt in a few months, but there is way too much sugar in my current yogurt for a regular healthy lifestyle.

On a side note i was watching rachael ray a few months ago, and there was an interesting guest that promotes sugar counting rather than calorie counting. What he said makes alot of sense. Here is the link. He alsoentions how much sugar is in an apple or banana so you may want to consider changing out that fruit for another. http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/show/segments/view/jorge-cruises-weight-loss-secrets/.

Good luck, you know I'm always here for you.

That looks seriously good! Do you warm up the oatmeal, or just eat it cold?

I was doing steel cut oats with peanut butter and a banana every day, and I still like it, but felt like I was getting into a rut. Lately, I've been having some melon with yogurt and a bit of honey, and then a couple boiled eggs.

MMM that looks tasty. I'm definitely an oatmeal lover. I make all different kinds of oatmeal. Peanut butter with banana slices, dried fruit and brown sugar and one of my favorites lately is trader joes coconut milk with mango slices (it's like a gourmet tropical concoction).
