Calgary Police 5K

This morning I ran the Calgary Police 5K. I haven't run a 5K race in awhile and I was hoping for good things from this race. Luckily the weather was cooperating (as opposed to all during the week) and it was gorgeous and sunny out. I got to the start line in time to see the half marathoners line up. It was really neat to see the police escorts ready and waiting to take off. Unfortunately they ran into an issue with the timing mats and the start was delayed a bit. By this point in time my "race day bladder" was telling me I needed to hit the bathroom before the 5K started so I opted to get that over and done with rather than waiting to watch the halfers take off. At the start line for the 5K I ran into Dawn. We chit chatted until our start went off. We wished each other luck and I took off. I have to say I know I took off way too fast in the start. My first mile clocked in at 8:23. After that I started to hit some uphills and it took a lot of energy out of my legs and I couldn't keep up. Mile 2 clocked in at 9:50, mile 3 at 10:17. That finish line seemed awfully far away and a sub 30:00 not very possible. At the very least I can say that my legs felt great on the run, they were just getting tired. I turned a corner around a building and finally...there it was...I found something left to sprint for the finish...
The 5K is billed as a fun run, so no chip time for us and no recording of our results either. I had my Disney Marathon chip on and it beeped as I crossed the mat though. I stumbled through the finish chute where they placed a medal around my neck and a wonderful volunteer handed me a bottle of water. After that I walked to the nearest tree where I attempted to catch my breath. I was still working on that at the time of this photo:
I checked out the Garmin - 30:22. Not quite there for my goal, but it was definitely there for a PR! Because the results aren't recorded I figured a shot of my Garmin out to prove the results nicely.
So as for my previous PR - it was at the Bay Run 5K in White Rock, BC on May 7, 2000. 30:28. My first 5K ever. Finally I have a new PR!

Oh my god, an 8:23 mile! I would have exploded! Congratulations on your PR! You kick ass!

(PS I had to go through border patrol near the CANADIAN border yesterday - a first for me. There were no Canadians in my trunk, so they let me through. I thought of you.)

Congrats on your new 5K PR! Way to go!

I bet we'd be near the same corral at Minnie - would you want to meet up at all before or after the 15K? You can reach me at audreygoblue at hotmail. I noticed some other bloggers are doing it too, would be fun to all meet up!

BTW - is it anything like the marathon with the staging area and all that or do you just go straight to the start corral?

I LOVE the goofy shirt :) I've been lurking a bit, reading your blog which I found looking for a training program. You're one of the big inspirations for me to run goofy in 2009. Way to go on the PR :) Thanks for the inspiration!
