Crazy Calgary Weather

Wow, Mother Nature is working hard to keep me away from biking outdoors!  The weather looked pretty nice all day today, and as I walked towards my car after work it looked like this: DSCN0081
Ugh…  I remained optimistic on my drive home and even changed into gear to ride outside.  I took Finlay out for a walk and I felt a few raindrops.  My bike workout was to ride for an hour at high cadence, and I had absolutely no desire to get caught in a potential downpour.  After this weekend it was apparent that the weather can change so quickly here.  So I bagged the ride and decided to get on the trainer.

My bike was making this weird creaking sound and I just could not figure out what it was.  I kept getting off and on trying to listen to what was causing it.  Eventually I figured out that my skewer in the rear wheel needed to be tightened just a bit more.  After wasting all of that time I decided to call it a day 30 minutes in.  Wouldn’t you know it, it was sunny when I finished up…

And in other random stuff:
- I’m doing a happy dance because I sold my wetsuit on Saturday!  Phew, it feels good to take care of that!
- Angie watched my swimming stroke during the aquathon on Sunday.  She noticed that I’m not following through on the end of my stroke properly and I’m pulling my hand on the water too early.  Must focus on getting my thumb to brush my thigh during the stroke.  Without that I am losing a lot of power…which probably explains a lot.
- I was at the pool on Saturday and I had a few sprint sets on the workout.  I think that when I see “sprint” I just churn the water quickly, but I don’t think I have that much more speed.  I really need to pay more attention to my form..!!
- I may have a chance at an open water swim this week, plus I’m racing this weekend.  Woo hoo!!

your weather is insane! sorry about the ride, but at least you fixed the noise issue. Good info about your swimming stroke too. I'd love/hate to know how bad mine is lol. Hope the weather gets better for you this week! :D

I grumble, grumble, grumble about swimming laps, but one of the lucky things about being born Australian is that I was swimming pretty much before I could walk. My Grandma was a state champion swimmer and taught me to swim so I don't have any trouble with my stroke. If only I could get over the boredom of the never ending 'T'. Hope that weather sorts itself out Leana!

Here in south Calgary it was sunny with lots of cloud yesterday. Now, downtown is sunny, and it looks like it's about to thunderstorm at home. You just never know. Insane, that's a good description.

Golf. You asked earlier. This will help your sprints. 50 m, swim as fast as you can or nearly so, but count every stroke your hands take. Then add the number of strokes to the number of seconds. For example, I can pretty reliably get 50 m in 45 seconds. The number of strokes varies from 36 to 42. This teaches you to balance speed and stroke efficiency. I'll tell you the secret now, even though I can't do it - kick like a mad fiend to drop time and strokes.

I'm soooo looking forward to an open water swim on the weekend!!!

Bummer that the ride didn't work out!

Good luck working on your stroke. Hopefully a few minor corrections will help you in your upcoming tri events!

The weather is crap all over Alberta. YUCK! A fellow blogger once said that she is "solar powered." I think I am too! :) :)

It's awesome you got some constructive feedback on your swimming.

I wouldn't have wanted to be caught in a downpour either! Hopefully your bike is done with having random parts not cooperate.

That's great you have things to work on in the swim (as opposed to not knowing.) Good luck this weekend!

DANG IT, I'll send this heat and humidity YOUR way;) I was sweating when I stepped out of my car...I had to wait to STOP sweating before I could shower this morning. Mile repeats at 530am, barf.

I love thunderstorms - and that pic looks pretty awesome. Actually, it looks just like my outside did today late afternoon (also just like yours, it was perfect all day).

Good to hear your swimming is coming along swimmingly. :)
