Disney World Half Marathon–Race Report

The fireworks went off and it was time to get going on this half marathon!

I tried a couple of new things in this race.  I wore my Garmin on my left wrist and my Timex on my right wrist.  I had the Timex set to beep 4:1 intervals as I knew that would be my key to get through the race.  I also decided to wear my iPod.  I haven’t raced or even ran with music since…oh…2006?  But I figured the music might be helpful if the going got tough.

I wanted to make it my goal to get as many pictures with characters as possible, so I was pretty delighted when I spotted Eeyore and Tigger on the side of the road.  I shoulder checked, ran across to the other side of the road and nabbed a picture.  Eeyore is my favourite Disney character ever, so I was happy that he was the first character I saw.DSCN4643I was feeling pretty warm so I had tied my heavier top around my waist.  As I ran toward the Transportation and Ticket Center I hoped that I’d see my parents so I could pass it off.  I also knew that my friend Maddy would be around there too, but I didn’t manage to spot anyone I knew there.  Gotta love running through there though as there are so many people and it is so loud!  You also don’t have to far to go to the Magic Kingdom either.  Which…I probably should have remembered for the next day, but oops…

I was keeping on schedule with my walk breaks and taking in GUs every 45 minutes and I was feeling good.  On to Main Street!  I was again trying to scour the crowd for my folks here but no dice.  I remember running down Main Street and Christmas carols were playing.  A lady in front of me complained, “Why do they have to be playing my least favourite carol as I run down the street?  I hate I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas!”

On to Future World and there was Buzz Lightyear!  Also one of the best things about arriving in Future World is the opportunity for a real bathroom with flushing toilets and running water.  Yeah, I stopped – thumbs up for bathrooms!DSCN4644I then had my first character picture fail as I missed the Alice in Wonderland folks by the Tea Cups!  The line was long and I didn’t realize it was a line up for characters until it was too late.  Oh well, on to the next folks – Peter Pan, Wendy, Captain Hook and Smee!DSCN4645Then around the corner where there was a lot of action by the castle.  The Fairy Godmother! The Trumpets!DSCN4647DSCN4652The Ugly Stepsisters!  I’m so sad that this picture is out of focus. Sad smile I think it was one of my favourites from the day.DSCN4648And finally, Cinderella and Prince Charming!  DSCN4653And then it was time for the highlight of the race – running through the castle!74486-270-018fThen I spotted my parents.  Let’s run over and say hello!IMGP1405Oh, and I can pass my long sleeve top off as well!IMGP1408Then the woman in front of my parents was telling me to move out of the way since I was apparently blocking a picture for her.IMGP1410OK, pass the top off, time to get going again!IMGP1411Ah yes, I did just post a serious of rather unflattering pictures just for your enjoyment!  Time for more character pictures.  I’m going to guess that is Tiana and Prince Naveen along with Louis the Alligator from Princess and the Frog.  I haven’t seen the movie yet (although I do own it on Blu-Ray) so yes, I had to google those character names just now.DSCN4654Now on to Frontierland and a couple of characters from the Country Bear Jamboree.  I totally felt like how they looked…DSCN4656Then on the way out of the Magic Kingdom I paused for a seat on the front of the train.DSCN4657Time for the hard part!  After you leave the Magic Kingdom it gets a bit tough.  You are on such a high running through the park and now you are on a pretty darn boring road running past the the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian.  I had another character fail as I ran past Mary Poppins.  I was on the wrong side of the road and it was just too crowded to cross.  Luckily I had plenty of time to spot Donald and Goofy up ahead though.DSCN4659DSCN4660Somewhere after here I was starting to hurt.  My legs were saying, “Yeah, you remember all of those long runs that we DIDN’T do?  Yeah, we aren’t so happy anymore.”  My quads were feeling pretty stiff.  As we made our way back on to the highway the sights were becoming few and far between.  This hot air balloon shaped like Epcot was pretty cool though!DSCN4661And the green soldier from Toy Story was a hoot as he tried to motivate the us as we ran past in his own unique way.DSCN4662Mile 11 – guys on stilts!  No clue where these guys are from, but I was hurting (and mostly walking by now) so I was happy to stop for a picture. And the last characters on the course!  Guess what, I have NO IDEA who they are!  I just really wanted an excuse to stop forward motion for a bit.  I’m pretty sure they must be friends with Tinkerbell but that’s about it.DSCN4664Finally, mile 12 just before we entered Epcot.  By this point in time I was not only dealing with tired and hurting legs but I had hot spots on both of my feet.  Sure, maybe I could walk the marathon with sore and tired legs but those hot spots were completely unpleasant.  There was no way I would attempt the full marathon if I wasn’t going to have fun so I knew in my heart of hearts that this was it for racing.IMGP1426I attempted to run a bit more as we entered Epcot and then finally, the finish line was in sight.  I high fived Goofy and then finally…I was done!74486-5083-006fIMGP1435I managed to set a new Personal Worst as I clocked in at 3:15:57.  BUT I did manage to get a lot of pictures with characters and I did have fun.  That being said, next time I will definitely make sure I train for something like this.  Bad Leana for falling off the bandwagon so badly this fall.

Anyhow, stay tuned because the stories aren’t over yet.  I have one heck of a dramatic spectator report for my mom’s marathon.

It involves a plan, a major math error, transportation malfunctions, beer and a black eye.  Really!

I’m also hoping my mom might write a guest post with her marathon race experience for me too.  Plus I have so much to talk about what I’ve been up to lately and where I’m going this year!

Getting back at it…

Wow, is it really October already?  September seemed to just fly by.  I pretty well took the whole month off and just enjoyed doing other things…besides training.  So what have I been up to?

I ran a whopping three times, one of which was the Melissa’s 10K Road Race.  And yeah…that race pretty well sucked since running felt awful.  I honestly felt like I hadn’t run for a year, not just a month.  On the plus side I got to meet Laurel who is just as wonderful as you would imagine!

Anyhow, I’m back on a program now so it is time to get my butt off the couch.  A program for what you might be asking…

I decided that I am going to drop the half marathon part of the Goofy Challenge.  I’m going to run the 5K as a warm up and train for the marathon.  I’m hoping to gain some speed back and make a good attempt at a marathon PR.  Right now I’m not sure how much speed is going to come back because I have slowed down a lot….but that is the goal!  I am dropping swimming for the moment and I signed up for a Friday yoga class to mix things up a bit.  Hopefully I can get some strength training in too.

So there we go….back on a plan!!

As for the rest of the trip...

...Disney World was awesome. Not only did I get to meet Claire, Cranky, Maddy and Marathon Chris, but I also got to meet Jen. Here are a few more highlights:
  • Going to see Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba on Friday night. If you are down in Orlando, I'd highly recommend it!
  • Relaxing on the beach at the Polynesian on Saturday. I got to be the official race photographer for Angry and Claire's swim off at the hotel pool. Check it out:
  • My mom finished the marathon as well - her first one ever! Congratulations Mom!
  • Hanging out at Hollywood Studios with Claire and Angry on Monday where we rode the Aerosmith Rock n Roller Coaster a few times, along with the Tower of Terror.
  • Getting in my first post-marathon run on Monday night - in 3 inch heels no less! I was running late for dinner at the California Grill thanks to the Disney Transportation system and I was trying to sprint to make a bus. The run hurt less than I would have figured, considering how sore my legs were. Despite getting to dinner late, it was amazing, and was followed by watching the fireworks at Magic Kingdom.
  • Raglan Road on Tuesday night.
  • Seeing Mr. Potato Head at the Toy Story Midway Mania ride in Hollywood Studios. This is officially my new favorite ride!

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K - Trip Report

You better grab a snack, this is one LONG post...
---
Crazy racer Leana....that's me. I literally hit the "Publish Post" button on Tuesday morning as I was frantically trying to finish off my race report, turned my computer off and climbed into a car to speed off to the airport for a flight to Orlando that afternoon. I'm not sure that I recommend such crazy back to back trips like that, but at least I made it down to Disney World with sneakers, Garmin and race gear in hand.
---
Wednesday started off with a trip to the outlet mall, lunch at Wolfgang Puck's at Downtown Disney, then hitting our first park in the afternoon. First up was Epcot. We oogled the Food & Wine Festival booths but didn't partake as we had a big dinner at the Rose & Crown in the UK Pavilion planned.
---
Thursday I actually got a run in. We stayed at the Saratoga Springs Resort and there was a great jogging trail around the hotel that also connected with Downtown Disney. I got 4 miles in. My legs were tired and the heat and humidity got to me a bit, but it felt great to see some new scenery on the run. That day we wandered around Epcot, eating and drinking at the F&W booths, plus we got a couple of rides in. That evening we hit Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party where I was able to clean up at the trick or treat locations and relive all those years that I missed out on trick or treating growing up. FYI - my formative years were spent in England and South America and unfortunately trick or treating didn't happen there at Halloween. So much candy that I missed out on as a kid... At least I got to make up for it at the Magic Kingdom on Thursday night. As another aside, the absolute best time to hit the rides at the Magic Kingdom is during the Halloween party - very minimal lines!
---
It was race packet pick up day at Downtown Disney on Friday. The doors were supposed to open at 3 pm and there was a huge line of people all ready and raring to get their race packets. I looked up my bib number - number 11! Whoa...how early on did I register for this thing? I didn't realize I was such a keener. I signed my waiver, got my packet (but no chip since I was using my own), then went to grab my t-shirt. I'm not sure why I was under the impression that we'd get a tech shirt (and there were notes about it glowing in the dark), but that wasn't the case. It was a regular gray cotton tee with the race logo on it, but nothing that mentioned the year or "inaugural." Kind of disappointing on the race shirt front. They did have some race merchandise - a ladies' and men's tech shirt, a fleece top, coffee mug or picture frame - but the cash registers weren't up and running yet so all you could do was pick up the special, limited edition pins if you had pre-ordered them. We grabbed out stuff and headed back out to Epcot where we met up with my cousin and her hubs for dinner. We talked race strategy - which is to say - how do you prepare for a night time race? Morning races are easy - get up, have some toast and get going. With a night time race you have all day to screw up your nutrition plan, and when is the best time to eat? We never really came up with anything concrete, but it was great to catch up.
---
Saturday....race day! Of all days my nutrition really went out the window. We spent the morning at Animal Kingdom and by noon my stomach was rumbling. At the first rumble I spotted an ice cream cart. I figured an ice cream sandwich this early in the day wouldn't hurt anything. After that I was a bit thirsty and the next cart was selling frozen lemonade. Seriously....that's not a drink....but I went with it anyways. We left the park for a late lunch/early pasta dinner at Downtown Disney. It was then back to the hotel where I got my race gear ready and changed. My parents wanted to relax before heading out to MGM Studios, but not one to sit on my behind while on vacation, I hopped a bus to MGM. It was pouring out...what was I thinking? In all honesty, heading to MGM early was probably my best decision I made all day. I bummed around the park for a bit and the rain let up so that their nightly fireworks and laser show Fantasmic was on for 7:30 pm. Road closures were set to start at 8:30 pm so everyone was asked to be at the start line by then, so I figured I could watch the show and lazily stroll to the start line afterwards. My cousin calls at 7:15ish to let me know they'll be heading to MGM shortly so I assume I'll run into them as soon as Fantasmic is over, but there is no sign of them or my parents. Apparently the traffic getting into the park was atrocious as everyone else was attempting to leave the park as it closed. It was taking an hour for folks to drive 2 miles. Because of all of the issues that folks had getting to the start of the race the 9:30 pm start time was pushed back about 20 min to give everyone a chance to arrive. We finally all managed to find each other at the start line and we were raring to go. Fellow blogging buddy Moon found me and said hello and we chatted for a few minutes, along with another online friend Susie who had also run the NWM 1/2 but we missed meeting then. They sang the national anthem, fireworks went off and it was time to start...
---
There was no choraling or self seeding on this race. If you were running the 13K you started first, then the 6.5K folks started 5 minutes later. That made for a very congested start. We began in the Television parking lot and the start line was just after you crossed through the entrance/pay booths for MGM Studios. Very cool. Out on to the highway it was... There was no getting in a groove as large groups of folks were walking side by side making for lots of weaving in and out. It seemed that anytime you wanted to give someone a heads up that you were passing them they were wearing earphones and couldn't hear you. I went out with no expectations given that I'd just run a rockin' half marathon the weekend before. I will say my disastrous nutrition the day of the race probably didn't do me any favours, and I also made the mistake of not taking any Sport Beans along with me. I figured it was an 8.3 mile run and I wouldn't need them, but in hindsight a pack before starting probably would have been a good idea. I have three words for what I felt at this race - holy humidity Batman. I can do hills, but humidity and I aren't friends since Calgary is always at practically 0% on the humidex. I just felt...ugh... There were four or five water stops along this course and only the final stop had Powerade. By that point in time I don't see the point of Powerade, and I don't really understand why Disney didn't just have Powerade all the way along the course. We ran along the highway, then turned on to a gravel road near Wide World of Sports and here things started to get a little weird. There were tons of volunteers all dressed in white like they were from an insane asylum (I'm trying to think of a more PC word than that, but it fails me right now). I guess this was Disney's way of spicing up the boring section through WWoS, but I wasn't sure that I found it entertaining or not. Maybe they were just supposed to be from the Twilight Zone... We ran a couple of miles around WWoS and then it was back out on to the roads. At mile 6 we were back at MGM Studios to finish the rest of the race out by running around the park. I loved running through the park - up to the Sorceror's Hat, through New York Street and the Extreme Stunt Show stage...this was the best part. By this point in time I was hoping to come in under 90 min...

Chip Time: 1:29:07
Overall: 1236 out of 2590
Female overall: 566 out of 1522
Female 25-29: 109 out of 251
My dad had already finished his 6.5K race and he snapped a couple of pics as I crossed the finish line. I got my very cool medal (sorry, not pic to post yet) and my post race snacks (a bottle of water, Powerade, a banana, and an Oreo brownie). My dad was waiting for my mom to finish, and my cousin and her friend were walking the course so her hubs and I decided to hit the rides. After riding the Aerosmith Rock 'n' Roller Coaster it was time to meet up with cousin and friend at the Great Movie Ride. I scarfed my brownie down before getting on the ride and I think this was a big mistake... As we start out on the ride I start to feel a bit nauseous. Let it be said that the Great Movie Ride is probably one of the slowest moving rides in all of the theme parks. I kept thinking that no one has probably been ill on the Great Movie Ride before and I might be the first... Luckily I made it off the ride without incident but that was the end of my night at the post-race party at MGM Studios as riding the Tower of Terror might not have been the best idea.
---
Sunday was a morning to sleep in and then it was back to Epcot for more F&W adventures. I had no idea that going to Walt Disney World could be such a boozy vacation but there was great champagne, wine from Chile, Argentina and California, and some terrific beer from Germany (Beck's Octoberfest and Sam Adams 12 Annual Seasonal)....wow. After snacking our way around F&W it was time for dinner at the German restaurant where we celebrated Octoberfest and ate copious amounts of schnitzel and different types of wurst. Yummy. Monday we had a few hours to kill before our plane left so we hit MGM and I finally got that ride in on the Tower of Terror. Then it was back home around midnight last night. After all that eating I am itching to get back on the running bandwagon again although my legs are still a little tired. I'm going to aim to get a couple of slow midweek runs in this week, then Saturday night is my Winterstart 5 mile night time race. Two night time races in a row....here's hoping I plan a bit better for this second one. Sunday I'm into uncharted territory....15 miles....my longest run to date.

At least my shoes match today

Today is off to a good start...I made it out the door with matching footwear on. Hurrah! Yesterday I did get my run in over lunch. I realized that it had been awhile since I had done any hill repeats in a long time. I've run on hilly terrain, but no repeats and the San Francisco race is looming. I figured that this was a good day to cruise on over and run up and down the hill at McHugh Bluff a few times. I can definitely see improvements in how I feel tackling the hill. I can tell that I'm definitely stronger and going faster up the hill. I fit in three repeats and ran back towards the office. I was right outside the Vietnamese sub shop at 3.98 mi and I was so hungry that I bailed on that final 0.02 miles to grab my sandwich and go. In the evening was yoga - another fabulous class. During the final relaxation pose you are supposed to clear your mind and think of nothing. I'm pretty sure that I've either fallen asleep or been pretty close to it during this time at every class. Apparently there is no in between for me on the relaxation front - I'm either going on all cylinders or I'm asleep! Today I've opted for the rest day instead of trying to cram yoga in over lunch. Tomorrow is my SLR... It is scheduled for 6 mi, but I realized yesterday I was supposed to cut back my midweek mileage on these heavy duty weekends, so I may cut tomorrow's run down to 4 mi instead.
---
San Francisco gets a lot of talk on my blog, but I've kinda glossed over, or not really mentioned, that as soon as I get home from SF I have to unpack, do laundry and repack because I'm leaving for Orlando the next day. I'm heading down with the 'rents for just under a week of vacation to run the Tower of Terror 13K at Disney's MGM Studios. This one is a night time race and I'm really excited about it. Hopefully running won't be too painful after the half marathon the weekend before... There is a ton of stuff going on at Disney World at that time - Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party (which yes, I'm going to go to, and I'm going to take advantage of the fact that adults can trick-or-treat because I sadly missed out on many years of trick-or-treating revelry as we were living in places where that stuff really didn't happen). Another thing I'm excited about is the Epcot Food and Wine Festival. There are kiosks with food and beverages from all around the world and you run around and sample as much as your stomach or pocketbook can handle. The thing I'm excited about at the Canadian booth is the wine supplier - Mission Hill. These guys are a fabulous winery in Westbank, British Columbia, and it warms my heart to see a great winery from the west coast get profiled out there. Not a lot of wine (in comparison to the huge wineries in the US or Australia for example) is produced on the west coast so most people outside of Canada rarely get a chance to see or sample these wines. Now if only there would be other beer available at Disney World besides Labatt Blue....
