2008 Minnie Marathon 15K

Background:

This year was the third running of the Minnie Marathon 15K (and my second year at the event). It was also the final year as Disney Sports has decided to replace this race with a Princess Half Marathon in early March next year instead. You could tell that they were really pushing the Princess Half on you and it felt that there wasn't a lot of effort put into this race - at the expo Cinderella and Prince Charming were there, but not Minnie Mouse. Apart from a jacket and a cotton t-shirt there was no Minnie Marathon race specific merchandise to buy. The race shirts look exactly like last year's (except cut way smaller and in cheaper fabric). Announcements about the Princess Half were made continuously at the start of the races. Sigh...I know I'm sounding bitter, but I'll miss the Minnie 15K. Last year the 15K represented the first race over a 10K that I trained diligently for and completed. Last year my mom came with me to Florida, completed her first race ever at the 5K the day before, then she cheered me on at the finish line for the 15K. We were both keen to go back for the race this year, and this year she would also complete the 5K and 15K as well.

The race:

I went into this race without a specific goal, I just hoped to beat my time of 1:45:06 from last year. My mom and I were up early and my dad dropped us off at the Animal Kingdom parking lot before they were going to close the road at 5:45. I ran into some friends at the start line and we all chatted away and I squeezed in a couple trips to the porta potties before it was time to line up for the start. The starting corral was self-seeded again and I made my way through to the front of the 9:00 - 11:00 mile group again. Just before 6:15 am Minnie Mouse counted us down, some fireworks went off and we were running. The 15K route is the same as the final 9.3 mi of the full marathon. You get to see if from a different perspective though as you run this on fresh legs. I took off from the start line at a relatively easy pace. Once we were out of the Animal Kingdom parking lot my silly shins started to announce their presence. I eased up, took a walk break and tried to keep going. All of a sudden negative thoughts were in my head. I was cursing my painful shins and wondering how in the world I'm going to start training for a full marathon again if I can't get past this. I was running straight into my own little pity party. Somewhere around 2.75 mi in we were approaching an overpass. I was almost due for a walk break and boy was I looking forward to it. A little voice in my head told me to make this overpass the defining moment for the race - skip the walk break for now and just run up the hill. I charged the overpass and it was just what I needed to break out of my funk. My legs were feeling fine now and like they were getting into a groove. Before I knew it I was at the out and back section of the course - and then I hit the turn around for the out and back way faster than I expected. Just as I was about to turn off the out and back and head up another overpass I saw my mom on the other side of the road entering the out and back herself. She recognized me and we waved excitedly to each other. It was such a great boost! I ran up the overpass and passed a few folks walking it. On my way down I was feeling great and I completely forgot about taking any walk breaks and I started clocking some sub-10:00 miles. Before I knew it I was already at the entrance to Hollywood Studios. I caught up with a few friends at this point - we cheered each other on and I was ready to keep flying through the park. At the exit we hit a water stop and I took a minute to get a drink and attempt to chew some Sport Beans. Apparently I tried to do too many things at once as I started coughing on the beans...yuck. We were now running the pathway between Hollywood Studios, the Boardwalk and Epcot. We passed a few folks out for their morning run, but otherwise it was pretty quiet. Then...the highlight...we entered Epcot at the United Kingdom in World Showcase. The pub in the UK is actually right at the 8 mile mark. They had the party lights flashing and the dance music playing. I ran through World Showcase, past Spaceship Earth high-fiving cast members and out into the parking lot and across the finish line. When I was running the Boardwalk I knew I had a good shot at PR'ing but I tried not to think too much about where I thought I'd finish at, I just wanted to run. When the final results were posted I was ecstatic - I'd cut off 5:07 from last year!

Final numbers:

Distance: 15K
Clock Time 1:40:26
Chip Time 1:39:59 (10:28/mi) - PR!
Overall Place 937/2632
Gender Place 847/2425
Division Place 123/341

Ready to go!

First off, thanks so much everyone for the congratulations on the PR this weekend! It feels great to finally beat my time from my first 5K race EVER. After the race was over the day was too nice to waste so a bike ride was in order. Neil and I rode from Dalhousie in the NW along the pathways to Edworthy Park, then down in to Marda Loop in the SW for just about 10 mi. There were some pretty good hills along the way, going both up and down. We stopped in at Original Joe's in Marda Loop for some chicken wings and sweet potato fries that tasted so good. Afterwards it was back on the bikes to return to the NW. On the way back - kind of a scary moment - Neil and I were riding down Home Road and crossing 16th Ave. A woman coming towards us wanted to make a left hand turn onto 16th Ave in front of us. She started her turn as Neil was in the intersection, then saw him and stopped. She didn't see me right behind him and she started her turn again just as I was in the intersection. Luckily she saw me in time but it sure felt like a close call. We were the only ones in our lane so we should have been pretty visible, but obviously she wasn't paying attention. After that the hills to get back to Dalhousie...intense! My legs were pretty well shot after the ride was over.
---
Yesterday was a designated rest day so nothing noteworthy to report.
---
Tonight I have BBC (maybe a run beforehand, but we'll see), then am catching a red eye out to Toronto and arriving in Orlando tomorrow afternoon. I am so ready for this trip! For those of you that will be at the 5K and 15K this weekend, I hope to see you there (Audrey, Bill, holo lkaiki, Maddy, Scott)! Please say hi if you recognize me. I'll be wearing a pink shirt and a blue running skirt at the 5K, and a red skirt and black tank top at the 15K.

Weekend Wrap Up

This weekend was a busy one:
Saturday
I had 9 miles on the schedule and as I had a few things to do that day my plan was to do my run around my neighborhood. The run felt great. Hurrah for rediscovering the love of running. I decided to run 9.3 - a full 15K - just to see how it went. My pace was pretty bang on what I ran at the Minnie 15K last year, except this run was full of hills, so I think I'm in good shape for the Minnie this year.
Sunday
Bikini Boot Camp (aka BBC) starts up next week so I had my returnee fitness assessment. We did a max heart rate test and my recovery is great, so despite being sick for so long my fitness is still pretty good.
In the afternoon we had a forecasted high of 20 deg C (68 deg F) so a bike ride was on order. I rode from my neighborhood towards downtown and made it as far as the Park & Ride at Shouldice Park (1 km short of where I've been parking at Edworthy to ride in from) before I had to turn around and head home. I estimate that if I ride from my house to work the distance is probably around 13 miles one way. The ride home was a good workout as I tackled the hill up to my neighborhood. The climb is 361 ft over the final 3 miles. All in all I covered 16.3 mi. I'm definitely loving this new bike!
Coming Up
This week is going to be a busy one. My final Fit Ball session is tonight, plus I'd like to get three runs in during the week, plus my race on Sunday. I'm not sure how much biking I'll get in though. Thursday afternoon I'm off to Vancouver so I can run in the Vancouver Sun Run. This is the largest 10K event in Canada. So far they have a record number 54,320 people signed up! Sunday marks the official start to racing madness as I have 5 races in 23 days coming up.

Hotels Galore

It seems as if I am not on vacation I'm thinking about the next vacation and this week was one for hotel bookings. I've made reservations for all of my out of town races with the exception of January's marathon:
  • For the Sun Run in Vancouver Neil and I will be staying at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. Luxury!
  • I booked the Saratoga Springs Resort for the Minnie Marathon in May - the same place we have stayed at for the last couple of Disney races.
  • I am super excited for the trip to Quebec City to run the Marathon Des Deaux Rives. This one will be spent at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac - a famous Quebec landmark. It isn't one of the official race hotels but I couldn't pass up the chance to stay there.
  • I love an opportunity to spend a night in Banff - it is my favourite destination for when you want to get out of town but it doesn't take long to get there. The Fox Hotel and Suites will be the place to unwind after the Melissa's race in September.

Speaking of Vancouver....it has been awhile since I was there last and the restaurant scene is always changing. Any Vancouverites out there have any suggestions for must do restaurants in town?

A busy week

Four days off at home was all I was able to handle, but the good news is I do feel better. I managed to keep myself pretty busy while I was at home. I:
  • Watched the Wedding Date.
  • Watched the first DVD for Pride and Prejudice.
  • Watched Catch and Release.
  • Watched a lot of the Food Network.
  • Watched a lot of Friends. In Calgary you can watch Friends from 6 pm through to at least 9 pm, and sometimes through till 10 pm on weeknights.
  • Deconstructed the January through September 2006 issues of Food and Wine magazine and filed all of the recipes and wine reviews into a binder.
  • Broke my programmable thermostat when I got up from my couch that has a ridiculous static charge on it (that's what you get when you live in such a dry climate) and attempted to change the temperature on the thermostat. I zapped it when I touched it, the screen went blank, came back on and was unresponsive.
  • Replaced the broken programmable thermostat.
  • Estimated the cost to replace the carpet in my living room with laminate flooring.
  • Made Asian Chicken Noodle soup and Split Pea soup.
  • Planned the themed food with my big bro for the Superbowl Party this weekend. New York, New England and Arizona will all be represented well.
  • Spent some air miles to book a flight to Orlando for the Minnie Marathon.
  • Saw Atonement, an absolutely amazing movie.
  • Put my training schedule for the entire year into an Excel spreadsheet. Training for the Minnie starts Feb 11 and as soon as that is done I start training for Quebec City. After Quebec I get two weeks off and then I start training for the Mickey. It is going to be a busy year, but thanks to Hal Higdon I know what direction I'm going in.

Bad news, good news

Well, so the bad news is, it is bronchitis. Apparently:
running a marathon
+
living in Calgary
=
bronchitis
I have been loaded up with antibiotics and ordered to eat soup and keep clear of work for at least three days. Who am I to argue? My main goal for this week is to watch the entire 1996 A&E mini-series version of Pride and Prejudice. The good news is that the whole wisdom tooth thing has been pushed to March 27th now.
---
In other news, I am officially official in a couple of races. I have signed up for the Vancouver Sun Run and purchased the plane tickets to get out there. I also gave some money to Disney to sign my mom and I up as a mother/daughter team to run the Minnie Marathon 15K. I still have to sign up for the St. Paddy's Day race and the Go Red for Women 5K, but I thought I would give my Visa a bit of a break for a day or two.
---
If any of you are even remotely considering one of the events at the 2009 Walt Disney World Marathon, it may be time to make that decision pretty quickly. The Goofy is at 85% capacity and the half marathon is at 55% capacity. I figure the Goofy will likely be sold out by the end of the week or early next week. There are no capacities posted on the full yet, so there is still some time before the crunch is on to sign up for that race.

Goals and goal races for 2008 and beyond...

In an attempt to avoid the post-marathon slump I'm determined to keep looking forward. I have a few goals I would like to aim for over the next 12 months:
  1. Run a sub-60:00 10K in Alberta. I managed one near sea level in Seattle, now I want to know that I can do it at altitude.
  2. Run a sub-30:00 5K. First I have to find a 5K to race though. Most of them around here seem to conflict with other races I want to do.
  3. Keep my fitness level at the point where I could run a half marathon at the drop of a hat. It might not be easy, or it might not be a PR, but this is what I'm hoping for. I figure if I aim to average 20 miles/week unless I'm specifically training for something, then this should be doable. Don't worry, I'm giving myself some time off before I start in on this 20 miles/week plan though.
  4. Keep some variety in my workouts. I'm sticking with Fit Ball over the winter, then it is back to Bikini Boot Camp in the spring. I'll be looking out for the unlimited pass to the yoga studio this summer again too.

As for goal races, here is what I have on my radar:

  1. St. Patrick's Day 10K Road Race in Calgary on March 16th. This race marks the full circle of my racing year, plus the post race stew is terrific.
  2. Vancouver Sun Run on April 20th (10K). This was my first ever race and I love running Vancouver, plus it is the second largest 10K in all of North America.
  3. Minnie Marathon Weekend May 3-4 at Walt Disney World. I'll be running the 5K and the 15K again this year. This is rumoured to be the final ever Minnie Marathon, so this is your last chance for a Minnie medal. I need mine to go with my Donald, Mickey and Goofy medals from this year.
  4. Footstock Half Marathon in Cochrane on June 14th. I ran the 10K there last year, but this time I'm going back for the half. You get a nice tech shirt and a nifty medal at this one, plus I love the post race pancake breakfast.
  5. If I find a great airfare deal I may want to run the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon on June 22. But we'll see about that...
  6. Marathon Des Deux Rives in Quebec City on August 24th. I really want to see more of eastern Canada and Quebec is top of my list. I hear this is an amazingly well organized race that is very scenic. I'm leaning towards the option of running a full here. Apparently the kilometer markers count down, not up!
  7. Melissa's 10K Road Race in Banff on September 27th. This is providing I'm able to register as the entries for this go like hot cakes in this town. There is a half marathon option here too, but number one choice is the 10K.
  8. Walt Disney World Marathon on January 11, 2009. I have to admit that I am enviously watching Maddy, Ovens2Betsy, Angry and Claire sign up to run the Goofy next year. I would really like to *run* this marathon and run it well so I think I'm going to stick with the option to run the full on its own. One day I want to go back and run the Goofy again, but 2009 won't be the year.
